Abstract
New Zealand's cardiovascular disease guidelines provide no upper age limit for risk assessment. This study explores general practitioners' (GPs') attitudes regarding assessing and managing cardiovascular risk among older people. A 39-item questionnaire including three cases representing various risk was administered to 500 randomly selected GPs (379 were eligible and 86 or 22% responded). This paper reports on the results and based on these concludes that more support and training in lifestyle assessment is needed as well as clearer guidance for assessing and managing the risk among older patients.
