Abstract

One of a set of 12 toolkits produced by the Ministry of Health for use by the District Health Boards (DHBs) and other health providers. Emerging from the New Zealand Health Strategy, this toolkit provides some guidance on addressing the population health objective to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CD). CD is the leading cause of death in New Zealand, and burden of CD is greatest among Māori and Pacific peoples. Two of the major modifiable risk factors for CD are obesity and physical inactivity. CD priority areas identified by the Ministry of Health are: cardiovascular risk screening and management; acute coronary syndromes; secondary prevention; cardiac rehabilitation; organised stroke care; cardiovascular disease and Māori; cardiovascular disease and Pacific peoples. This toolkit provides evidence on each of the cardiovascular priority areas and information on cardiovascular tools currently available, tools under development and tools for future development.
