Abstract

Details the effects of a 2-year community-wide diabetes prevention programme aimed at reducing the prevalence of insulin resistance in a high-risk largely Maori community. The incidence of insulin resistance decreased significantly from 35.5% to 25.4%, with the greatest changes seen in women aged 25−49 years. The proportion of participants undertaking the recommended level of exercise increased from 45.1% to 60.3%, and the proportion of participants eating wholegrain bread increased from 42.2% to 65.4%.
