    Hi Joe

I spoke with Ruth at the end of the electives forum and expressed my interest with piloting the implementation of ODPs in Northland DHB as 30% are currently ODPs, 3 are Nurses (dual skills) and the Educator is also an ODP.  An Ideal platform from which to launch.

I did not get all of Ruths details but I believe she worked for HWNZ. Would you happen to know her contact details to enable me to discuss this further  with her?

    Regards

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for your comments and they reflect many feeling of ODP's around New Zealand. The Health Workforce New Zealand team was contacted by a few DHBs to explore the ODP role and expanding it wider in NZ to better reflect the role in the UK. I agree with the points you make.

    Thanks

    Joe

Very excited about the introduction of new workforce roles especially Operating Department Practitioners (ODP). A great number of Anaesthetic Technicians and Nurses employed in NZ already have the necessary skills to fulfill this role and utilising these skilss will not only benifit the patient but make for a very productive operating theatre.

The ODP's principal role is to provide care for the patient at all stages of the surgical process. This process can be considered as three interconnected aspects of care - the anaesthetic role, the surgical role and the post-anaesthetic role.

I am sure the introduction of ODP's in theatre will greatly assist anaesthetic technicians with their quest for HPCA registration.
