Abstract
The Diabetes Excess Weight Loss (DEWL) Trial, was a 2 year randomised controlled trial to assess whether a highprotein : moderate-carbohydrate diet was more effective than a low-fat : high-carbohydrate diet in reducing weight and optimising glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. A concern with high protein diets in this population is a potential detrimental effect on renal function. Weight loss, however, has a potentially beneficial effect on renal function. Renal surveillance was therefore an important part of the study.
