Increased Immunisation

Childhood immunisation provides protection from preventable diseases such as measles, rubella, polio and whooping cough (pertussis) which can lead to serious complications and long-term harm.
Increased immunisation has been a health target since August 2007 when only 67 percent of New Zealand two-year-olds were fully immunised. From July 2009 immunisation became one of six nationwide health targets.
Immunisation coverage rates for two-year-olds rose from 85 percent in March 2010, to 90 percent in July 2011. The target is 95 percent by July 2012 – a level where communities are protected from outbreaks of diseases like measles.
