This report is the first of three reports, in the second series on the health of children and young people in Otago. The aim is to assist those working to improve child and youth health locally, to utilise all of the available evidence when developing programmes and interventions to address child and youth health need. Two topics were selected for more in-depth review: Initiatives to Increase Breastfeeding and Understanding Ambulatory Sensitive Hospitalisations (a group of conditions potentially avoidable through early access to treatment in primary care, e.g. diabetes). Other topics covered in the report include oral health (including dental admissions) and most frequent causes of hospital admissions and mortality in children.
